One Song Could Save a Life: New Jersey Teens Take on Impaired Driving

New Jersey is often ranked as one of the safest states in the country for teen drivers, thanks to strong graduated licensing laws, zero-tolerance impaired driving policies, and robust education efforts. That's something to be proud of. But even in one of the safest states, one impaired driving crash is too many.

The teen years are a time of growth, independence, and first freedoms, and getting a driver’s license is one of the biggest milestones. But teens are still developing judgment and impulse control, which makes alcohol especially dangerous. What can feel like harmless rule-breaking can become deadly the moment keys are in hand.

Because teens’ brains and bodies are still developing, alcohol hits harder and faster. Studies show teens are far more likely than adults to be involved in a crash after drinking, even below the legal adult limit of 0.08. Add limited driving experience, and one decision can instantly become a tragedy.

Teens are uniquely positioned to reach other teens with messages that feel authentic. The Your Song! Your Voice!  competition invites high school students to write and perform original songs about the risks of substance use, with a special emphasis this year on impaired driving, in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

One winning student or group will earn a $5,000 music contract and perform throughout the year at schools and community events, spreading a message that can save lives. Finalists will be featured in a virtual concert hosted by WRAT 95.9’s Jimmy Steal.

Even though New Jersey is doing many things right, our teens are going places - literally. Many will head to colleges out of state, carrying their voices and values with them. A song written here can reach far beyond our borders.

If you’re a parent, teacher, coach, or mentor, or if you know a creative teen with something to say, now is the time to encourage them to use their voice.
