Knock Out Opioid Abuse Student Athlete Initiative Coming to Rowan University

I’m excited to share that we are continuing our impactful Knock Out Opioid Abuse student-athlete initiative at Rowan University in partnership with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).

On Tuesday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Pfleeger Concert Hall, students from across the state will gather to hear an inspiring and eye-opening message from Ray Lucas, a former Rutgers and NFL quarterback. Lucas has spoken candidly about his dependence on prescription opioids due to injuries sustained during his playing career. His powerful story of addiction and recovery offers an important lesson for young athletes and communities working to combat the opioid epidemic.

We’re also honored to welcome Special Agent in Charge Cheryl Ortiz of the DEA – New Jersey Division, who will deliver opening remarks, and New Jersey First Assistant Attorney General Lyndsay Ruotolo, who will speak on the state’s ongoing efforts to address the opioid crisis.

This initiative aims to educate student-athletes about the real risks of prescription opioids and the importance of taking care of both their physical and mental health.
