This Saturday, November 8, communities across New Jersey will join others nationwide in participating in the 17th Annual American Medicine Chest Challenge, a public health initiative aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and encouraging safe disposal practices.
It’s no secret that prescription drugs, especially opioids, have played a major role in the overdose crisis. In 2024 alone, New Jersey reported 1,813 suspected overdose deaths, many linked to opioid use. And while national overdose numbers have started to decline slightly from their peak, the crisis is still far from over.
That’s where the American Medicine Chest Challenge comes in. This annual event reminds us of five simple steps we can all take to help protect our families and communities: take inventory of your medications, secure them, use them only as prescribed, safely dispose of any unused or expired meds, and, most importantly, talk to your kids about the risks of prescription drug misuse.
One of the easiest and most effective things you can do this Saturday is safely dispose of any medications you no longer need. With over 220 permanent disposal sites across New Jersey (and nearly 2,000 nationwide), it’s never been easier to do your part. Visit AmericanMedicineChest.com to find a site near you.
Small actions can make a big difference. Join the challenge and take a step toward a safer, healthier New Jersey.
