Broadway, Bars, and Fortune: A Story of Redemption Through Theater

For over a decade, Dr. Shuvendu Sen has been a partner in PDFNJ’s efforts to address the opioid crisis and promote safe prescribing, prevention, and recovery throughout New Jersey. Through lectures, advocacy, and community outreach, he has shared his expertise and passion for helping those affected by addiction. His latest project expands that commitment into a new medium: the short documentary Broadway, Bars and Fortune.

The film tells the story of four formerly incarcerated individuals who found a path to healing through theater. Guided by David Rothenberg, a Broadway figure and founder of the Fortune Society, they perform The Castle. This play allows them to share their experiences of trauma, addiction, and incarceration while also expressing resilience and hope for the future. It has been officially selected for several film festivals, including the New York Lift-Off Film Festival and the Hispanic International Film Festival.

In addition to his work as a filmmaker and author, Dr. Sen serves as Vice-Chair and faculty member in the Department of Medicine at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. His leadership in both the medical and community arenas reflects a shared goal: helping individuals overcome the challenges of addiction and move toward healthier, more hopeful futures.

We are proud to support Dr. Sen’s ongoing efforts and look forward to the impact his documentary will have in continuing the conversation about recovery and redemption.
