We know there is a need to be ever vigilant in protecting our youth from underage drinking, as well as using marijuana and opioids. We also need educate our kids about kratom. The American Psychiatric Association notes that kratom contains opioids and has the potential for dependence and addiction, especially among those who use it on a regular basis.
A recent article states that products containing kratom are sold in gas stations, convenience stores, tobacco shops, bars, tea houses, and can be purchased online. One company promotes its kratom product as containing “natural ingredients” with “a unique herbal blend to support well-being.” With advertising like this, one can see that our youth are being tempted to experiment with this product, especially since information on its potential harm is not given in the advertisements.
The article concludes by stating, “It’s important to talk to your kids about kratom addiction and side effects and remind them that just because something makes a lot of promises about ‘helping you be present’, it’s still a mind-altering substance and the consequences (and interactions with other medicines) are something that can have a much higher cost.”
