PDFNJ Seeking Scripts for Television PSA Contest

MILLBURN --- Calling all future movie writers and producers!

The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey is calling on New Jersey middle school students to write, star and produce a television commercial with a substance abuse prevention message for their peers by entering the 14th Annual Middle School Public Service Announcement Challenge (MSPSA).

Students in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade are invited to create a 30-second television public service announcement (PSA) script designed to get a substance abuse prevention message out to their peers.

“Getting a strong peer-to-peer substance abuse prevention message out to tweens and teens is the goal of the initiative,  said Angela Conover, Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey’s Director of Media & Community Relations.

She explained that the students should submit scripts addressing topics that affect themselves and their peers, such as underage drinking, prescription drug abuse, or illicit drug abuse. “The students who submit the winning script not only write the 30-second PSA, but produce, edit, and star in the spot that is often filmed at their school,” Conover added.

Each school can enter multiple teams, but each team may only submit one PSA. Each PSA will be critiqued by a panel of judges who will be looking at creativity, message content, age appropriateness, and ability to be produced. Admission forms can be found and downloaded at DrugFreeNJ.org.

All submissions must be received by Friday, April 19, 2013.

Last year’s winning script was submitted by Mikeala Quigley, Brianna Lizotte, Samantha Novack, and Abigail Pearl, a group of seventh grade students from Jefferson Township Middle School, Morris County. The students wrote a script and starred in their television commercial entitled “We Don’t Cheer For Beer” which gets an underage drinking message out to their peers.

Conover noted that all winning scripts from previous years can be found on DrugFreeNJ.org.
