Assemblyman Tim Eustace (D-Bergen/Passaic) on Friday joined with U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker to highlight the need for more locations to safely dispose of prescription drugs in New Jersey and urged residents to take part in the American Medicine Chest Challenge tomorrow.

Eustace was the lead sponsor of legislation (A-2859) signed into law by Gov. Christie a year ago today that formally established the “Project Medicine Drop” program, allowing participating law enforcement agencies to maintain a secure prescription medicine drop-off receptacle where unused or expired prescription drugs and other common household medications may be anonymously surrendered by members of the public seven days a week, 365 days a year.

However, Eustace noted, a year later, a number of towns are still without the program.

“In the coming weeks, as we work to finalize the budget, I will be asking my colleagues to dedicate more money this year to get ‘Project Medicine Drop’ boxes into all the towns that have requested one,” said Eustace.  “I also urge residents to clean out their medicine chest and bring any unused medicines to a drop box nearest them tomorrow.”

Eustace noted that tomorrow, April 30, is the Drug Enforcement Agency’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.  Residents can join the American Medicine Chest Challenge and drop off their unused drugs between 10 am – 2 pm at participating locations, which can be found here: http://www.americanmedicinechest.com/
