The most recent figures from the federal government on drug overdose deaths puts New Jersey in a league of its own.
 
Comparing the 12 months ending in September 2016 with the 12 months ending in September 2017 shows that New Jersey’s drug overdose death rate spiked 50 percent, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
 
New Jersey’s 12-month drug deaths during that time frame rose from 1,692 to 2,542.The District of Columbia was next highest on the list with a 44 percent increase.
