Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey Executive Director Angelo Valente spoke with Bert Baron of 1450 WCTC about the importance of Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day. Today, volunteers around the state will be spreading critical information on the risks of prescription opioids and their link to heroin abuse. Valente also spoke about the Knock Out Opioid Abuse Town Hall Series, which will be moving to Somerset County on October 10.

MILLBURN — The severity of the opioid epidemic in New Jersey requires leaders to take a greater role in seeking solutions to stem the pain and tragedy being inflicted upon state residents. Atlantic Health System, an integrated health care delivery system headquartered in Morristown, has accepted that challenge.

On bad days, five new babies are born in withdrawal from opioids at Cabell County-Huntington Hospital in southern West Virginia. In the neonatal therapeutic unit, there are zero unoccupied beds, but staff can’t turn the infants away. On one week in mid-August, the unit held 27 newborn babies in a space designed for 15.
