Overdose Deaths Decline in Nationwide, But Continued Focus on Root Causes Is Essential

Millburn, NJ Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that overdose deaths in the U.S. are at their lowest levels in three years. In April 2024, the estimated number of deaths in the previous 12 months was 101,168. In New Jersey, the estimated number of overdose deaths in the 12-month period ending in April 2024 was 2,363, down from 2,564 suspected deaths in 2023.

"While it's encouraging to see a decline in overdose deaths, we can't ignore the fact that these numbers are still alarmingly high," said Angelo Valente, Executive Director of the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey. "To ensure this trend continues downward, we need to address the root causes of substance use and provide support for those who are struggling. This includes expanding access to recovery programs, addressing mental health issues, and prevention initiatives that focus on utilizing non-opioid alternatives to addressing acute pain,"

Valente also highlighted the risks associated with the prescription of opioids to young people, particularly for common procedures like wisdom tooth removal or managing pain from sports injuries. "There are safer alternatives available, and we need to ensure that patients are informed about these options," he said.
